OUR HISTORY

Theta Chi History

This is our creed, which details our values that we strive to live up to and encourage our brothers to adhere too.

Theta Chi was founded in 1856 at Norwich academy in Vermont.  Its two founding members were Fredrick Norton Freeman and Arthur Chase.

The Gamma chapter of Theta Chi was the third chapter in the country and was opened at the University of Maine, Orono in 1907.

Theta Chi's colors are military red and white and our flower is the red carnation.

Gamma Chapter is the oldest consecutively active chapter of Theta Chi Fraternity across the country. We have been consecutively active for more than 100 years. Since our chapter was founded in 1907, we have never lost our charter, or been shut down!

Theta Chi was originally a military fraternity, since it was founded at Norwich. However, it has spread to many campuses around the country, and today there are more than 140 active chapters!

We are proud to show that in the 2015-2016 academic year we were named the most improved chapter out the those 140 active chapters. We also were awarded a Henry Hersey award for significant increase in membership, since we almost tripled our size last year.

Daughters of the Crossed Swords

In 1976 Gamma Chapter began allowing recruitment for the daughters of the crossed swords.  They were our female counterpart and helped raise funds for the fraternity.  The program unfortunately has ebbed away over the years and was done away with well over a decade ago.

History of Theta Chi

Alpha Chapter of Theta Chi was founded at Norwich Academy in Vermont. It was founded on April 10th of 1856, at the Old South Barracks. Sadly Alpha chapter is not active since greek life was banned at Norwich.
